New research suggests that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying these medications must be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Users who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
