A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office ended the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in national infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in full adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
